Starting Your First Remote or Hybrid Job? Here’s How to Crush It.
Etiquette and best practices for remote and hybrid jobs
Welcome to the world of flexible work. Whether you're clocking in from your kitchen table, a coworking space, or hitting the office a few days a week, remote and hybrid jobs are the new norm. But heads up—just because you're not always at a desk doesn’t mean expectations disappear.
Here’s how to show up strong (even from your couch):
Look Like You Meant to Be on That Call
You don’t need to suit up, but rolling into a Zoom in your sleep shirt? Probably not it.
Keep a “Zoom shirt” handy—something clean and neutral you can throw on fast.
For office days, feel it out. Business casual? Chill jeans? Start slightly overdressed, then adjust.
Even at home, clean = professional. Think comfy, but intentional.
Time Zones Are Real, and So Are Core Hours
You might have flexibility, but most companies still expect a rhythm.
Know your team’s core hours—when everyone’s expected to be online.
Be time-zone aware. If your teammate’s three hours ahead, don’t send that 11 PM Slack unless it’s urgent.
Breaks are cool—just drop a “grabbing lunch, back at 1 🕐” message so people know what’s up.
Meetings Still Matter (Sorry)
They might not be constant, but remote meetings are key.
Log in on time, camera ready.
Use your mic like a pro—mute when listening, unmute when it’s your time to shine.
Drop a 👍 or 🔥 in the chat to show you're alive and engaged.
Your Background = Your Vibe
You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect home office. Just make sure what people see isn’t chaos.
Clean up what’s behind you (yes, that laundry pile too).
Try to face a window or use a desk lamp for good lighting.
Virtual backgrounds are fine—just don’t pick one with unicorns.
Sound Check 1-2
Your audio matters more than you think.
Use headphones or a mic if you’re in a noisy space.
No blasting TV or barking dogs mid-call. (It happens, just try your best.)
A quick mic upgrade can make a big difference.
Communication = Your Superpower
Working remotely means more writing, less talking. Make it count.
Reply to DMs and emails—“Got it!” is better than radio silence.
Over-communicate at first. Let folks know what you’re doing and when you’re stepping away.
Set your Slack/Teams status. Emojis welcome.
Culture Still Exists (Even Online)
Yes, even on Zoom. Especially on Zoom?
Join casual Slack channels. Show up to onboarding sessions.
Ask questions, feel out the tone. Are people using memes? Do they say “good morning”?
Match the energy—GIFs and all.
Last Word
Remote or hybrid work gives you freedom—but it’s on you to show up. Stay active and involved, and don’t ghost. You don’t need to be perfect, just thoughtful.
Go get 'em! 🙌
